What is a doctor's note?

A doctor's note, also referred to as a medical certificate or doctor's excuse note, is a crucial official document that verifies an individual's visit to a medical professional. It serves as concrete evidence of the consultation and may contain comprehensive details where doctors note the diagnosis, treatment plan, and any necessary restrictions on the patient's activities.

To get a doctor's note, patients typically visit their primary care physician or a doctor at an urgent care clinic. They can also schedule a virtual appointment with their doctor if that option is available.

Medical practitioners, such as doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, can issue an official doctor's note. These notes are clinical documentation of a patient's medical condition and may be necessary in various situations. They must include a doctor's signature and name to be rendered valid.

Doctors' notes can be vital as a note for work or school absences, physical examinations required for sports or travel, or when making insurance claims. Doctor's notes or medical certifications are essential under the Federal Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which protects employees and their right to job-protected and unpaid leave for qualified medical and family reasons (US Department of Labor, n.d.).

Apart from providing proof of a consultation, a doctor's note e is also an essential communication tool between the patient and the employer or school administration. It outlines any necessary accommodations or restrictions the patient may require, ensuring their health and well-being are adequately taken care of.
